Just over the Ashley River bridge is the area of Charleston known as West Ashley, a community filled with
its own charisma and possibilities. West Ashley offers much in the way of conveniences—shopping, dining,
sight seeing—and because of its affordability, it has become a favorite among first-home buyers who are
interested in the beauty of Charleston. The Avondale district, located right over the bridge from downtown,
is one of the best-known areas in West Ashley, boasting some of the city’s favorite (and oldest!) places
for grabbing a bite and a hand-crafted beer. Other attractions in Avondale include interesting shopping
spots and homes with plenty of “neighborhood qualities” like spacious back yards and gorgeous trees.
In fact, many neighborhoods in West Ashley are some of Charleston’s oldest, and each one has its own
welcoming atmosphere. West Ashley is perfect for those looking to live near historic downtown, yet crave
the peaceful, laid back vibe of its outskirts.
Great shopping—no matter what your budget may be—is one of West Ashley’s notable features.
A little ways up Highway 17 (known as Savannah Highway in this area) is the Citadel Mall, the area’s
largest indoor facility and one of the best spots for browsing and socializing on rainy Saturdays.
West Ashley also has its share of great places to eat, as well as an all-organic grocery store.
The area also hosts an impressive selection of schools, both district supported and private.
Charles Towne Landing, the place where the first settlers landed in Charleston on the Ashley River, is now
a fascinating park featuring a zoo, lush gardens, and other interesting sights for all ages. And, just up
Highway 61, sight-seers will enjoy the beauty of Middleton Plantation, Drayton Hall, and Magnolia Plantation.
These plantations are quintessential areas of Southern charm, and are packed with Nature-lovers at all times
of year, eager to see the flowers of Spring and the foliage of Autumn. In Short, West of the Ashley means
more of Charleston to explore, and of course more to love.
